Dr. Abdul Kalam: Scientist, Writer and Visionary

“All of us do not have equal talent. But all of us have an equal opportunity to develop our talents” –said Bharat Ratna, Late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India who passed away on July 27, 2015.

Like Dr. Abdul Kalam, you might be from a non-English speaking background, without wealth and privilege, but you should, like him, dream big, and grasp the opportunity in every possibility. Like Dr. Abdul Kalam, develop your talent resolutely and so also your communication skills in English. Develop fluency in spoken English, a hallmark of the countless lectures and talks Dr. Abdul Kalam delivered in India and abroad during his lifetime.

Dr. Abdul Kalam was a truly self-made man. Coming from a poor background – he was the son of a boat owner who operated a ferry – he had to work from an early age, even distributing newspapers, to supplement his family’s income.

Dr. Abdul Kalam was described as bright and hardworking, with a strong desire to learn, during his school days. It is these qualities that eventually led to an illustrious career in the field of satellite launch vehicles, missile technology, nuclear technology and in developing indigenous capabilities in critical technologies for the country.

Dr. Kalam held responsible positions in various institutions and in the government before he served as the President of India from 2002 – 2007.

Known as the Missile Man of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam wielded the pen with as much flair. Despite his tight schedule, he found time to put pen to paper almost every day and wrote more than a dozen books on pure science and his vision for the country. His writings were simple and straightforward, making his messages attractive and inspiring to both students and the common man.

If Dr. Abdul Kalam could develop command over the English language, both spoken and written, even though his mother tongue was Tamil, so can all of us. This would be one genuine way to pay tribute to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
